Period Inspiration:

The Matunga Art Deco Cane Lounge Sofa reflects a distinctive chapter in the history of Indian furniture, when the geometric clarity of Art Deco design in the 1920s and 1930s merged with the long-standing craft traditions of cane weaving across the subcontinent.

Neighbourhoods such as Matunga in Bombay developed during this era as part of the city’s early twentieth-century urban expansion, and many residential interiors of the period embraced modern furniture that balanced international design influences with local materials and craftsmanship. Furniture workshops across Bombay frequently produced pieces in solid teak paired with woven cane, combining durability with climate-appropriate ventilation suited to tropical homes.

This sofa exemplifies that synthesis. Its rectilinear wooden frame, gently sculpted arm supports, and tapered legs reflect the restrained geometry characteristic of Art Deco furniture, while the cane panels on the seat and back recall the centuries-old cane weaving traditions of South and Southeast Asia.

Designed for drawing rooms and verandahs alike, the Matunga Art Deco Cane Lounge Sofa embodies a quiet elegance - where modernist design met colonial-era craftsmanship, creating furniture that was both practical and architecturally refined.
